Is eFootball pay to win?

The question of whether eFootball is "pay-to-win" (P2W) is one of the most debated topics in the community. Since the game transitioned to a free-to-play model, its primary source of revenue is the sale of eFootball Coins used in the Dream Team mode.

The short answer is: No, it is not strictly pay-to-win, but spending money provides a significant, undeniable advantage ("Pay-to-Accelerate" or "Pay-to-Compete-Easier").

The Free-to-Play Experience

It is entirely possible to build a highly competitive squad and reach Division 1 in the eFootball League without spending a single dime. Konami is actually quite generous with free rewards compared to competitors like FC (FIFA) Ultimate Team:

  • Free Coins and Nominating Contracts: By completing weekly events and logging in daily, you can earn premium currency slowly but steadily.
  • Player of the Week (POTW): These cards, acquirable via free spins or minor coin investments, are often competitive at the highest levels.
  • GP Players: The base players (Standard cards) you buy with the free GP currency can be leveled up into beasts. A fully maxed-out Standard Mbappe or Haaland is incredibly difficult to defend.

The Premium Advantage (Epic and Big Time Cards)

Where money creates an advantage is in the acquisition of Epic and Big Time cards. These special legends (like Romario, Vieira, or Ronaldinho) usually feature:

  • Unique "Boosters" that push stats beyond the normal 99 cap.
  • Permanent "B" form, meaning they are rarely in bad condition (downward arrow) before a match.
  • Unique player ID animations that make them feel smoother or faster than their stats suggest.
  • These players reside in 150-player boxes. You use Coins to spin the box. There is no guarantee you will get the Epic player easily; you might have to clear the entire box (costing around $100-$150 real money). This "gacha" mechanic means whales (players who spend heavily) will consistently have squads full of 100+ rated Epics.

Conclusion: Skill vs. Wallet

At the end of the day, eFootball has a steep learning curve and a high skill gap. A highly skilled player with a free-to-play squad of 95-rated Standard players will comfortably beat a poor player managing a $2,000 squad of 103-rated Epics. However, when two players of equal skill meet, the one with the paid Epic squad will generally have the advantage due to better finishing, faster reactions, and overpowered defensive AI.
